15 best tourist places in Bangladesh
1. The Sundarbans
The Sundarbans is the world’s largest mangrove forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the last home of the Royal Bengal tiger in Bangladesh. Spend two or three days on a boat exploring narrow creeks, walking forest trails with an armed guard and spotting deer, crocodiles, monkeys and birds. The forest is closed to tourists every year from 1 June to 31 August. Read our guide how to visit the Sundarbans from Dhaka or see our 3-day Sundarbans boat expedition.
2. Srimangal, the tea capital of Bangladesh
Srimangal is surrounded by rolling tea estates and is the place to taste the famous seven-layer tea. Walk through the tea gardens, visit a tea factory and look for western hoolock gibbons in Lawachara National Park, one of the most accessible rainforests in Bangladesh. See our Sylhet & Srimangal tea country tour.
3. Ratargul Swamp Forest
Ratargul is one of the few freshwater swamp forests in Bangladesh. In the monsoon the forest floods, and you glide between half-submerged trees in a small wooden boat. It is one of the most photographed places in Sylhet.
4. Jaflong and Lalakhal
Near the border with India’s Meghalaya hills, Lalakhal is famous for the blue-green water of the Sari River, best enjoyed by boat. Nearby Jaflong offers river views, stone-collecting boats and Khasia villages.
5. Old Dhaka
The capital’s historic heart is one of the most intense and colorful places in Asia. Explore Lalbagh Fort (begun in 1678), Ahsan Manzil (the Pink Palace), the Star Mosque and the Armenian Church, ride a cycle-rickshaw through the bazaars and cross the Buriganga River by wooden boat from Sadarghat. See our Old Dhaka heritage day tour.
6. Sonargaon and Panam City
About an hour from Dhaka, Sonargaon was once the capital of Bengal. Its abandoned street of 19th-century merchant mansions, Panam City, and the Folk Arts and Crafts Museum make an easy and atmospheric day trip.
7. Mosque City of Bagerhat
Founded in the 15th century by the saint Khan Jahan Ali, the Mosque City of Bagerhat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its centrepiece, the Sixty Dome Mosque, is one of the largest historic mosques in South Asia. It combines perfectly with a Sundarbans trip. Included in our Best of Bangladesh in 10 days tour.
8. Paharpur Buddhist Monastery
Somapura Mahavihara at Paharpur was built by the Pala dynasty in the 8th century and was once one of the largest Buddhist monasteries south of the Himalayas. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most impressive ancient ruin in Bangladesh. Read more in our history of Bangladesh.
9. Mahasthangarh
Near Bogura, Mahasthangarh preserves the remains of ancient Pundranagara, a fortified city already established by around the 3rd century BCE. It is a must for history lovers and pairs well with Paharpur.
10. Kantaji Temple
Near Dinajpur, the 18th-century Kantaji Temple (Kantajew Temple) is covered in thousands of finely carved terracotta panels showing scenes from Hindu epics and everyday life. It is widely considered the finest terracotta temple in Bangladesh.
11. Cox’s Bazar
Cox’s Bazar has one of the longest natural sea beaches in the world, stretching about 120 km along the Bay of Bengal. Watch the sunset, drive the scenic Marine Drive to Himchari and Inani, and visit the Buddhist temples of Ramu. See our Cox’s Bazar beach tour.
12. Saint Martin’s Island
Bangladesh’s only coral island lies in the Bay of Bengal off Teknaf. Under current government rules it is open to tourists only from November to January, with day trips only in November, to protect its fragile environment. Check the latest rules before planning a visit.
13. Kuakata
On the southern coast, Kuakata is one of the few beaches in the region where you can watch both sunrise and sunset over the sea. It is quieter than Cox’s Bazar and has Rakhine villages and Buddhist temples nearby.
14. Tanguar Haor
Tanguar Haor is a vast seasonal wetland and a Ramsar site of international importance. In the monsoon it becomes a huge inland sea best explored by houseboat; in winter it attracts large numbers of migratory birds.

The hill districts of Rangamati, with Kaptai Lake and its famous hanging bridge, and Bandarban, with the Nilgiri hills and the Golden Temple, are some of the most beautiful places in Bangladesh. Important: the US, UK and Canadian governments currently advise against travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and foreign visitors may need advance permission.
